Citizen Science practices for Computational Social Sciences research: The conceptualization of Pop-Up Experiments
نویسندگان
چکیده
Under the name of Citizen Science, many innovative practices in which volunteers partner with scientist to pose and answer real-world questions are quickly growing worldwide. Citizen Science can furnish ready made solutions with the active role of citizens. However, this framework is still far from being well stablished to become a standard tool for Computational Social Sciences research. We present our experience in bridging Computational Social Sciences with Citizen Science philosophy, which in our case has taken the form of what we call Pop-Up Experiments: Non-permanent, highly participatory collective experiments which blend features developed by Big Data methodologies and Behavioural Experiments protocols with ideals of Citizen Science. The main issues to take into account whenever planning experiments of this type are classified and discused grouped in three categories: public engagement, light infrastructure and knowledge return to citizens. We explain the solutions implemented providing practical examples grounded in our own experience in urban contexts (Barcelona, Spain). We hope that this work serves as guideline to groups willing to adopt and expand such in-vivo practices and opens the debate about the possibilities (but also the limitations) that the Citizen Science framework can offer to study social phenomena.

متن کاملComputational and mathematical approaches to societal transitions
After an introduction of the theoretical framework and concepts of transition studies, this article gives an overview of how structural change in social systems has been studied from various disciplinary perspectives. This overview first leads to the conclusion that computational and mathematical approaches and their practical form, modeling, up till now, have been almost absent in the research...
متن کاملSeven Years of Social Sensors
The aim of this paper is to review seven years of research on a specific vision of social media which is that of social sensors, i.e., alternative information systems able to detect and characterize interesting and yet unreported information and events in real-time, crossing topics, locations and language barriers. In particular, we here present a computational exercise based on a Topic Modelin...
متن کاملCrowd science: It is not just a matter of time (or funding)
The last years, citizen science, or crowd science, has increased tremendously, both in number of projects, and number of participants. Most literature on crowd science focuses on its advantages, for both scientists, and the participating citizens. The challenges of crowd science come mainly from limited organizational capacity of some of these projects. As a result of this line of reasoning, th...
متن کاملParticipatory Genomic Research: Ethical Issues from the Bottom Up to the Top Down.
Participatory approaches to genomic research manifest along a continuum from bottom-up citizen-science initiatives designed to liberate scientific inquiry from the constraints of traditional research institutional contexts and professional practices to top-down investigator-initiated studies designed to expose the public to scientific research processes and build its support and enthusiasm for ...
